End of Another Week...

End of another week in tjc. Haha. This week's pretty ok. Don't remind me of my TP test. It was damn suay. Haha. But I'm not feeling too sore over it. Haha. I'm just glad it's over.. for now. Haha. I realise that I can't really multi-task. Now that I'm teaching full-time, I don't want, and don't have the energy to do anything else. Haha. I just want to concentrate on my present job. Haha.

Teaching sometimes can be quite tormenting, especially if your students think that they are damn smart. Sometimes they really do not appreciate your goodwill. But then again, that's the minority. I'm glad that my classes are mostly filled with great people. Haha. They really make my day. I can nag all day but I really do enjoy teaching them. Their enlightened expression's priceless! Hahaha. Oh and Thursdays are torturous days for me. I've got like 6 lessons that day that spans all the way to 5pm. Really shag. Haha. And on top of that every Thursday's exercise day. Haha. Went running with Li Si and John. Shag x2. Haha.

Today's A Levels results day. Walking to the hall and waiting for the principal to announce the results, I still get the jitters and goose bums. Haha. It's strange coz I'm not the one getting my results, but the atmosphere was really tense. Haha. TJC did fine. Nothing spectacular, but not bad too. Haha. For those that did well, I can feel the sheer happiness in the air. For others who did not fair as desirably, I could really feel it. It's like re-living the exact same event 2 years ago. Really nerve-wrecking. Haha. Anyway congrats to everyone who got their results today! You all deserve the praise for the hard work at the A's. Congrats to the bums of CG00/10 for their great results! Julia, Ser Yang, Matthew, Shi Ying, Felix, Eugenia, Yong Chuan, Theen Yew, Atika for their good performance! Distinctions galore! Haha. A bunch of happy bums now!

The Oxford Interview

Haha. Not me lah. I would never ever apply to Oxford to study Math. It's not me. Haha. Anyway just remembered a question that was posed to Theen Yew at his Oxford Interview. Haha. This is the question:

Is 0.9999999999... (infinite terms) less than 1, more than 1 or equals to 1?

By answering this question, you could be on your way to Oxford! Wahaha. Apparently I think my dad's a genius. I asked him this question and he could get the answer! AMAZING!

The solution is so neat! I like it. Haha. Here it is:

You must recognise that 0.999999999... (infinite terms) forms a geometric progression.
i.e. 0.999999999...= 0.9 + 0.09 + 0.009 + 0.0009 + 0.00009 + ...
                                 = 0.9 + (0.9 x 0.1) + (0.9 x 0.1^2) + (0.9 x 0.1^3) + (0.9 x 0.1^4)...
                                 = 0.9/(1 - 0.1)   [Formula for G.P. Sum to infinity]
                                 = 1
Therefore, 0.9999999... is equals to 1.

Alternatively, there's another proof:
i.e. 1/3 = 0.33333333... (infinite terms)
       0.99999999... = 0.3333333... x 3
                                = 1/3 x 3
                                = 1
Therefore, 0.9999999... is equals to 1.

Don't you think the proofs are elegant? Haha. That's the beauty of Math. =D

Anyway there's another proof which I can't remember. And there are more questions too! Haha. This is the only one I remember coz I'm teaching APGP now. Haha. Perfect. I shall post this question to my students tomorrow. Wahaha.

Ok this is a random post. I just find this question quite interesting. This is the reason why I am a Math tutor now. LOL. =X

Hectic Day

Such a hectic day yesterday. As per normal I have 3 tutorials yesterday. The thing about teaching is that when the class is proactive and do their work, it's such a pleasure to teach them. And when they come up to you and say that they understand what you are going through in class, I feel really good. But for one of my classes yesterday, it was like everything that can go wrong went wrong. The class didn't do their tutorial despite me giving them like 5 questions to prepare. Only 5! Terrible. And they were super hyperactive! And if you have a headache it seriously kills you. Yupz, it was a difficult class to teach. But after that, the classes were good. Haha. So it made up for that terrible class. Haha.

I think many of them still don't understand what they are in for in a junior college. Haha. I shall see even more lost faces in class next week when the lectures go on full speed. Haha. Finish binomial theorem in 1 lecture, then recurring numbers in another 1 lecture... Haha. It will only get interesting. I'm not being sadistic here, but some of the kids really need a wake up call.

I was voicing out my opinion to Mrs Tag and Mrs Khet and they were saying that the level of math in Singapore is indeed dropping. Sounds cliche? It's not! Just take my classes as an example. Almost all of them got distinctions for both Math at O levels, but they can't simplify algebra properly. Haiz. Need to have lessons on algebra again? It's quite demoralising sometimes, especially when you sincerely want to teach them something, and they just can't be bothered. I guess I'm the only tutor in the school that bothers to go to every student to check that they got no problems with the tutorials and concepts. Mrs Tag was telling me not to bother re-teaching them algebra and stuff, coz it's assumed knowledge, and it's time that they become more independent and responsible for their own learning. That's part of growing up. I shall be optimistic and hope that one day my students will appreciate what I have done for them. Haha.

Ok having some free time yesterday morning, I asked Mrs Tag for some last minute crash course on interviews and she's sooo helpful to send me all her notes and powerpoint. I was supposed to attend an interview that afternoon for GEP, and I didn't do any preparation all thanks to all the marking and lessons I have to plan for. Anyway she's the higher education head, so yupz, all those notes came in as quite informative. It was really quite useful. That's the good thing about Mrs Tag being my neighbour in the staffroom. Haha. LOL. Anyway rushed off after a late lunch to NUS for the interview. My bro was kind enough to drive me all the way there, wait for me, then drive me back. =D Anyway the interview was alright. There were 3 professors interviewing me. I don't know how I fared, but what I can say is that I tried my best so it's up to them whether or not they want me. =D

After that went home, changed out of the stuffy office wear before going to meet up with CG00/10! Hahahah. That's the relief teacher's/interns gang. Haha. Yupz, met up for BBQ at Eugenia's condo at Bedok Reservoir. Had one of the most fun BBQ's there! It was really funny. Haven't had such a good laugh in eons! Laughed till me jaws and tummy feel like cramping. Haha. All the nonsense we did. If our students saw what we did, there goes the respect and status. Hahahaha. See, teachers have to let off steam once in a while. In school have to maintain a bit of image. Outside.. I don't care! Hahaha.
The Artist, Jiaying taking an artistic shot of the charcoal.. HAha
Camwhores~
Anyway thanks Ser Yang for ordering the food (although he ordered wayyyy to many chicken wings. LOL!), Eugenia for lending us her place, Matthew for cooking non-stop, and finally everyone from CG00/10 for turning up! Haha. Had a blast of a time. Sometimes I'm astounded by the wonders of randomness. Haha. CG00/10 started out randomly - all the reliefs and interns just starting through mass lunches and staffroom nonsense. Haha. Then one day, we randomly decided to have a BBQ before the A's is released. And although we all teach different subjects (totally.. We represent almost every department in the school! LOL!), we still managed to get along, and really fine! Haha. Randomness. Love it.  More of such gatherings anyone?

Anyway when I got home, I was sooo tired that after washing up, the moment I lie on my bed and shut my eyes, I fell asleep. It's that fast. Haha. Really long and hectic day. Was out for like 17hours yesterday. Terribly tiring.

Early morning today again, this time not coz of school, but for driving. I have been accustomed to waking up early already. Feels weird(but good) to wake up later than usual. Haha. Anyway had circuit again today. It was quite good actually. No major mistakes. TP test's on Tuesday. Really hope to pass it asap. I think driving lessons are getting a bit boring. Haha. And there are places that I want to drive to! Hahaha. LOL.

Later gonna go pick my parents up from the Airport. They have been gone for the past 12 days having the time of their life in Italy, France and Switzerland. I say it a million times but I'm still feeling sour about not being able to go! Hahaha. =X

On Course!

It's only when we lose something that we really know how to appreciate things. Haha. Yes, it's nothing serious. I just miss my sleep on weekdays. Waking up at 6am daily is damn torturous. Haha. How did I do that for the past 14 years of my life?! Haha. And so during the weekends, I just feel like nua-ing at home. So comfortable. Haha. Even if I do go out, I feel like nua-ing at some cafe or something. Haha. That's terrible. Haha.

Anyway on sunday a few of the MSU guys came over to my house to visit. Haha. Did some illegal stuff (but it seems to be legal during the new year! Haha. Weird but true). Yes it's called gambling. Haha. LOL. Anyway that's the only time I will ever gamble. Haha. Don't have a habit of doing it. Ate lots of rubbish too! As per normal. And SEBASTIAN is DAMN SKINNY now lah! Just 1 year ago he's like 80 plus kg, but now, he's like 50plus? Terrible. Haha. Those slimming centres out there should look out! Sebes is the most successful case of slimming lah! A bit over for me though. It's a case of too slim too soon! Haha. Anyway had lots of fun! And had yu sheng too! =D

This 2 days have been on course. Went to Teachers' Network near Great World City for the relief teaching course. Met up with the rest at Bedok before heading over. It's a pretty ulu place actually, but thank goodness we didn't get lost. Anyway on both days, we reached damn early. Haha. It's actually to escape the morning working crowd on the MRT. So we headed for breakfast at someset! Haha.
Kaya toast and kopi at Killiney Kopitiam. Yumz. We only look forward to meals while on course. Haha. Lunch is always settled at Great World City. Haha. It's actually quite a walk from the Teachers' Network, but for the Subway we walked! LOL!

Anyway the course's really long and naggy. Haha. The speaker, Mr Cheong, is quite good lah, just that it's overly long. Haha. No matter how good a speaker is, if he talk's like non-stop for 2 days, it can't be good. Haha. Oh did I mention Mr Cheong's like 80 years old already?! That's like 4 times my age lah! Haha. But he sure don't look and sound that old. Energetic old man. Haha. And his credentials are.. Boomz. Seriously damn experienced retired teacher. Haha.

The whole course made me damn tired. Haven't really done a lot in these 2 days, but feel damn lethargic. And yes I wake up even earlier than normal to go orchard! Terrible.

Now back to school to apply what I learnt.. or not? Wahaha

Teaching!

End of my first week in school. I'm really enjoying tutorials with my classes. Haha. First thing's first my classes are great. They are surprisingly active in class, and it's in a good way! They interact a lot, but they are not noisy. Just the way I like it. And yes they are realistic kids lah. I told them about class participation marks, but I never expected them to volunteer so spontaneously! That's really a pleasant surprise for me. And I'm so happy that they are willing to ask questions in class! Haha. At least there's no 冷场!Haha.

I gotta admit I can barely remember their names but I promise i will try my very best! Hahaha. I feel so paiseh that my students say hi to me and I can't really remember their names. Haha. That's the thing about JC's that's different from secondary schools. The kids are really more open and proactive! I like it that way. Haha. It's more like mentor and students rather than teachers and students. Much friendlier environment.

But one thing's for sure - their foundation in additional math is far from ideal. Haha. I think it's due to all the orientation and fun, and their brains are not adjusted back yet. Haha. I shall not worry too much about that and focus on getting them back on track. Tutorial speed varies quite a bit for me. Haha. My science classes are really faster than my cross combi class. That may not be a good thing for my science classes. 29/10 has problems with tutorials and they really asks a lot of questions about lecture notes, etc. But it makes me feel more secure coz at least I'm sure that after I explain to them they understand fully. For 12/10 especially, they don't seem to have much problems with tutorials, and they don't ask much questions. BUT, when I marked their assignment yesterday, I realised that they have quite a bit of problem on presentation, methodology, etc. Haha. They will get quite some nagging from me on Wednesday when I see them!

Monday and Tuesday's course for me! Going with John, Li Shi and Shi Ying for the course at somewhere in orchard. It's a whole day course lah, 8am to 5.30pm. It's gonna be damn taxing according to Mdm Aini. Haha. But the good thing's I'm paid for the 2 days and I will get a payrise of $10-15 per day once I complete it. So that's damn good lah! =D=D=D But I will miss my class! The school hired a relief teacher to relief me on tuesday sia! That's damn funny. Relief and relief teacher? Hahaha. Anyway lucky I do not have any lessons on Mondays. It's really a pain to miss tutorial classes. Coz they will be at different speeds and some classes have to catch up. Tough on them and me. Haha.

All my nagging in class is really bad for my throat. Today woke up with no voice again. Haha. Needed quite a bit of warm water to warm up my vocal chord. LOL. I should find ways to maintain my voice. Haha.

Just had a tough driving lesson. All the circuit stuff to remember. Haha. Test's coming so I really gotta remember my stuff. Haha. Last stretch already! Haha.

My GEP interview's coming too! I'm beginning to get damn panicky. Really no idea what they will ask but I hope everything turns out fine!

My First Tutorial Classes...

Yayness. Today's the official start of full timetable. So yupz, I have my first 2 tutorial classes today with 12/10 and 29/10. Ok there's quite a difference between the 2 classes but I pretty much enjoyed teaching both classes. Haha. Quite a nice bunch of kids. They are so not shy lah! Super participative in class. I love it that way. Anyway the only thing I didn't like was the classroom! No aircon! Damn heng lah. There's only a few classrooms in the college left without aircon and i got them 2 consecutively! Sianz. Anyway my timetable's a bit weird. I will be seeing both 12/10 and 29/10 again tmr. And I see 07/10 like twice in a single day! Damn funny. And I don't have a single class on Monday. LOL. Gotta get the timetabling sorted out.

Oh and I realised that I'm damn bad at remembering people's faces. Seriously. I must really try very hard. So far I can only remember my 3 boys from 29/10 coz there are only 3 guys in the class, and the 2 indians from 12/10 coz they have exactly the same surname and they are not related at all! Haha. I need some significant features to remember those kids. Haiz.

Gotta prepare tutorials really fast. My kids are really efficient in churning out tutorial answers. Haha.

All the visiting...

Had a great day yesterday. Went on visiting spree. Haha. Started off the day walking. Haha. Coz my uncle and grandaunt lives in siglap too! Haha. It was really touch and go sort of thing. Haha. Coz I haven't gone visiting in many years already, so this year there's the need to visit everyone. . No time wasted. Haha. After that rushed over to my granduncle's place. Haha. All the East siders... so convenient. Haha. My granduncle has this dog...
Absolutely adorable lah. Haha. He craves attention and definitely a good massage. Haha. Love it to bits. Hahaha. He's absolutely no scared of strangers and he don't bark! Haha. Cute!

Anyway stayed for a while before heading off north to my maternal grandparents place for lunch! Haha. Every year's buffet and this year's no exception. Haha. But it's home cooked so it's damn nice. Haha. And all the curry, fried stuff and tit-bits ain't helping my throat recover. Haha. But it's CNY! So heck the health-consciousness! Haha. Anyway the place got really crowded coz my mum has lots of siblings and so does my mum's mum.. a.k.a. my grandmother. Haha. So got really suffocating. Haha. Thank goodness they live in a semi-detached house. If not it will be even worst. Haha.

Next up was another of my granduncle's place at Yishun. Haha. Standard visit. Then to pasir ris to another of my grandaunt's place. Haha. It's amazing how much tit-bits my stomach can store. Haha. Everywhere I go I just snack on rubbish, plus the soft drinks and the occassional cheng tng to wash down all the sinful stuff, just like how a toilet flushing system works. Haha. Except the end place is my digestive system and not the sewage system. LOL. Anyway I'm already quite sick of those new year snacks already. And yes I feel as if I've put on some weight already. Damn.

Anyway after that went home to rest a while first. Damn shag lah. Woke up at 6am and after that it's all the rushing around. And the scorching sun's not of much help too. Haha. Anyway rest for like 1 hr before heading next door to my neighbour's home. Haha. Retarded right? Dress up to go next door. LOL. I wished I could walk over in slippers and shorts. Haha. Damn. Anyway my neighbour's quite hilarious. The 3 kids are damn funny and adorable. Haha. But the kids need to study on CNY! Feeling quite unjust for them. LOL.

Alright finally some laxing time! Haha. Headed to my dad's sis house at Siglap hill for dinner! It's like reunion dinner no. 2! My favourite visit for the day. My aunt hired this french chef to cook at her home.. same as the one for seng giap's wedding. Had a blast of a time there. The food was great, the place was undeniably comfortable and just boomz. Wahahaha. Met up with wilbur and wilson there too. Our jaws never stop moving lah. Dinner, dessert, snacks, ice cream, wine, champagne, beer, coffee.. LOL. The list just goes on. Haha. I think the 5 of us were a bit on the drunk side lah. A bit high. And everyone had to remind each other that our faces were as red as guan gong. LOL. The nescafe capsule machine's damn cool lah. It churns out really good coffee and it's really good for making you more sober with the nice combination of beer, red wine and champagne. Haha. And yes we were indulging our senses in bhangra shows as well. Deala or no Deala. The hindi version of deal or no deal, where everything's in rupees. LOL. Haha. Did I mention before that me and my cousins are quite a bhangra movie and show fan! Hahaha. I think they are absolutely comical despite their weak plot. But it's really for a good laugh! Haha. Oh and I don't understand any hindi but we just love it even from reading the subtitles. Hahaha. Bollywood's the in-thing! Haha. Really enjoyable night. Haha.Yes all of us had alcohol and amazingly I managed to reach home safe and sound with my dad driving with a red face. Haha. Shhhh...

Alright today's the 2nd day of CNY, but coincidentally, it's my great grandfather's anniversary too. So everyone came over to my house early today for some prayers, and brunch. Haha. My mum and maid's cooking like crazy as per normal again. It's always like that. My mum's like the family's in-charge for prayers and anything associated with it. Haha. So here we go again. Munch munch munch. Haha. From morning to afternoon. Haha. Didn't go visiting today, so it's nice to be able to rest and enjoy myself at home. Haha. Cable TV's been nice by screening good movies all morning. Haha. Started off with incredible hulk, kungfu panda, iron man, pink panther. Haha. Niceee. Munch munch talk talk watch watch. That's the life man! Haha. Anyway after that was slacking at home again! In the evening my bro's girlfriend came to visit and dinner. Hahaha. So here I am now blogging. Haha. So far CNY's been great. Haha. The Ang Bao's a great too! Haha. Like the Mac Donalds Slogan " I'm lovin it."=D

Day 3 of CNY tmr. Let's see how everything turns out.

Anyway I happen to listen to 萧宏仁's song today. I think it's quite nice. Haha. Do listen to it. Haha.
